Ongoing: "Ritual of resilience" series

If I were to define life as a type of ritual, it would be one of resilience. Throughout the journey we are faced with obstacles that often leave us in states of pain, confusion, and hopelessness...but there is always that seed of blind faith that sparks the fire of endurance dwelling within. This essence is what keeps us going, this is what makes us rise up time and time again, to continue fulfilling our own unique ritual of resilience. We are able to transform pain into something beautiful and make the obstacles we face our teachers. With this ongoing series of meditative paintings inspired by my life experiences and Yoga practice, this is the perspective I wanted to share, along with messages and symbols that uplift and remind us of who we truly are at the core.

About: A personal reflection on transforming tremendous pains into beauty and earned wisdom during these hallowed seasons; which have been filled to the brim with constant and unexpected changes. A visual reminder to be patient with the shifts, the emotions, the losses, and gains as they rise and fall...come and go. And most importantly, to always listen to and nurture one’s maturing intuition... to rest and recover as needed, remaining rooted and ready for the times that call for the most profound listening and healing- the here and the now. 🌙✨Sunday November 1, 2020

DISCARDED HISTORY” (MIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE)

This mixed-media sculpture, is composed of discarded books that I purchased from an annual sale at my University’s library. The books I used to create this piece, include texts that provide detailed accounts of America’s history and illustrated elements from Adventures of America 1857-1900. I used pages from these books- to paint a nuanced scene of America’s ancestral narrative and to honor all those who sacrificed their lives and their freedoms to constitute the country. The purpose of this sculpture, is to inspire equity, holistic perspective and narrative preservation- while honoring the collective stories, sacrifices, and accounts of those who came before in the face of erasure.

Inspired by the ancient yogic principle of “Ahimsa” and Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech on making peace an important social practice for non violent coexistence; this narrative and conceptual art series, fixes its satirical lens on dark elements of society’s disconnectedness- seeking to instill consciousness and a respect for peace and social balance. The choice to creatively exaggerate the issues plaguing society and to magnify them, is so that human beings, who have come to accept a gradual decay of ethics and compassion as the norm- shift, start to prospect for changes to ultimately become a part of creating solutions to bring forth more equity, integrity, justice, and dignity to community.

“I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin to shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-centered" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered. . . . A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values. There is nothing, expect a tragic death wish, to prevent us from reordering our priorities, so that the pursuit of peace will take precedence over the pursuit of war. There is nothing to keep us from molding a recalcitrant status quo with bruised hands until we have fashioned it into a brotherhood and sisterhood. We still have a choice today: nonviolent coexistence or violent co-annihilation.

Ahimsa

 a-hiṃsā - अहिंसा

Non-harmfulness (harmlessness). To not wish harm to any living creature — not even to any lifeless object. Ahimsa is about the intent, rather than the action itself. It is an attitude of universal benevolence.
